Lovastatin and Lipitor is prescribed from the doctor because they both tend to help by lowering the cholesterol. They belong to the class known as the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. These two medications do have some differences with them that people should know about before taking them.
The LDL cholesterol shows a 35% decrease with the 10 mg atorvastatin, however, Lovastatin shows only a 25% decrease with the LDL Cholesterol and that might not be a lot but some people could have problems with the amount of difference between them. Some think that Lovastatin might not be very effective because of the dose being lower, but what is lower is the atorvastatin. Cholesterol is reduced by Atorvastatin and Lipitor provides the recommended dose needed for most patients whereas Lovastatin might give out to much but it varies according to the patient's health condition and needs because Lovastatin might still be needed in some cases. Lovastatin can be used when a person has over 40% to lose with their goal in cholesterol.
You should talk with your doctor to find out more of the differences between Lovastatin and Lipitor. Each case is unique and the side effects might vary depending on what your doctor puts you on and the dosage that is given. The side effects also vary between the two medications not just the dosage. If you experience any of the side effects regardless of if your doctor puts you on Lovastatin or on Lipitor you should contact your doctor right away.
