The drug lovastatin is a simple medication that has been developed to fight the ever increasing number of patient that suffers from high cholesterol. Lovastatin is a drug that can be found in natural food such as fungi like the oyster mushrooms which has been used in medicines by the Asian cultures for many hundreds of years. It was only recently that pharmaceutical companies have been able to isolate and manipulate the organic compound and use it in medicines. This medication is used to inhibit the collection of cholesterol in the body and is therefore a very popular drug to be dispensed.

Side effects of taking too much of the hypolipidemic agent can cause muscular problems where the muscles do not function according to their directions from the nervous system. This side effect is known as myopathy and can be dangerous if not dealt with by doctors in sufficient time. When the patient feels muscle spasms, muscle pain or any problems with performing normal daily tasks then they need to consult with their doctor again and possibly be taken off the lovastatin medication immediately. Toxicity is low for this medication but the side effects can be dangerous to your health.

Lovastatin is a product that is categorized in the family of statin medications which are all used to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of the patient getting heart disease effects. Lovastatin is an oral form of medication that is found in pill and tablet forms but is generally only available from the pharmacy with a medical prescription from the doctor. Some people are calling lovastatin a diet drug which enhances the ability to lose weight but this type of information is not correct because the medication has no effect towards weight loss what so ever.
